What we do

When Lana’s Basket was established in 2014, the idea of stamping silverware with motivational messages was nothing new. Small businesses on platforms like Etsy and Not On The High Street had been hand stamping cutlery for years, working mostly with vintage flatware made from softer materials such as silver, brass and silver-plated metals. This silverware is lovely, but it does require regular upkeep such as polishing, and over time there is the potential for it to tarnish. At Lana’s Basket, we predominantly work with brand new stainless steel 18/0 grade cutlery. We also stamp other stainless steel items such as keyrings, shoe tags and decorative trays.

Lana’s Basket has a firm business ethos of promoting and encouraging recovery. Our products are all lovingly hand stamped by Elle from her workshop at home, and are specifically designed to be used as tools for people in recovery from mental illness and eating disorders. At the time, this technique and concept was something that didn’t exist at all.

Why stainless steel?

Cutlery that’s as durable as it is inspiring was not so common around the time that Lana’s Basket was established. Stainless steel is, by nature, an extremely hardwearing material. It’s widely used in restaurants and homes all over the world for the very reason that it requires very little (if any) maintenance. It’s also dishwasher friendly and won’t tarnish/rust, qualities we feel are of very high importance when considering cutlery as a recovery aid.

The handstamping process

The hand stamping detail given to all of our work, as well as the nature of stainless steel, mean that each piece will have its own little knocks and wobbles, and no two will ever be the same or exactly as pictured. We firmly believe these differences should be celebrated and are what makes your piece unique (just like you!). Each piece is stamped letter by letter using individual punches and a hammer. Since stainless steel is such a hard metal, it requires a lot of force in order for the punches to print clearly onto the surface. We then spend time hand buffing each piece to remove any rough edges and to give it a slightly more matte finish. Whilst most of the individuals we work with have no issues with the texture of the stamping detail, we do appreciate that others are more sensitive to subtle changes. For this reason, if you or your loved one has sensory processing challenges, we would recommend considering laser engraved cutlery. At this time, this is not something we offer.
